The PittsburghTODAY Positivity Index (PPI) uses sophisticated analytics to track what´s being tweeted about 15 benchmark regions and calculate a score for each that reflects how positive those tweets are.  We pair scores and rankings with word clouds and topic wheels to lend insight into events influencing a region´s positivity score.  In word clouds, the more often a word is tweeted, the larger and bolder it is displayed within the cloud.  Topic wheels show frequent terms and themes in social media conversation.  Inner rings contain frequently used terms.  Outside rings show how they relate to the topics of conversation.  Words within the word clouds and topic wheels are those which appear most often in Twitter posts.  Certain words may be offensive to some readers, but accurate reporting requires displaying commentary as it was posted.   The PPI is updated weekly.

PittsburghTODAY and the University Center for Social & Urban Research (UCSUR) developed the PPI with data gathered by the ForSightTM social media analytics platform created by Boston-based Crimson Hexagon, which uses a powerful opinion analysis algorithm developed at Harvard University to quantify social media conversation as positive, neutral or negative in context.  The PPI produces a relative score between -10 and +10 for each region.  The higher the PPI score, the more positive the tweets were the previous week.  Twitter tends to produce more positive posts, with scores typically ranging between +3 and +6.  PPI scores below +3 indicate a significant recent negative event in the city.  Scores higher than +6 indicate a positive event.

Twitter data is not a representative opinion sample.  Twitter users tend to be younger, more educated and more male than the general population, according to the Pew Research Center.  The PPI is a barometer of social media sentiment that offers fresh insight into our benchmark cities and a way to measure a "city vibe" not captured by traditional indicators.  So, bookmark this page and visit it every week to see how Pittsburgh and other cities rank in the Twittersphere.
